Each year on August 7, our nation recognizes the men and women who are known as our Purple Heart recipients. The Purple Heart, one of the oldest military decorations, is presented to service members who were injured or killed in service to our country. The Marine Forces Reserve birthday is on August 29th. Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance The United States Air Force was established on September 18, 1947, when President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act. This act created the Department of the Air Force, with the Air Force as a separate branch of the armed forces. Therefore, the Air Force celebrates its birthday on September 18th each year. In the United States, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday in September. It honors those who were prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action. Gold Star Mother's and Family's Day is a day of remembrance and honor for the mothers and families who have lost a child or loved one while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. It's observed annually on the last Sunday of September, recognizing the sacrifices these families make when a loved one dies in service to the nation. The VFW Buddy Poppy program is a fundraising program of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) that distributes artificial poppies to the public, with donations received going towards supporting veterans and their families, including rehabilitation and service programs, and the VFW National Home.
